Reunion!

Here are a few pics taken during my (now 4th or 5th) visit to Barcelona. I thought it would be a long time before I could see my Barça friends again. But I got to fly direct to BCN from YVR before coming to Paris for my Nanny job, so I thought why the hell not?! I'll post more when I have the chance. Sitting in one spot here for too long (and of course chasing a 3 year old) in this heat is bad. Staying dry and cool is impossible.

First proper night out with Jade, Gary and their wild Northern friends.

My hosts <3

A wonderful night to have a terrace party

Cava and pinxos with the girls

Visiting old flatmates! :)

Discovering Forum and it's wonderfully breezy snacking spots.

First ever dinner on the beach with lovely friends

Being lost in Gotico with Despina ("sexy beer" guys in the backround)

Another brave baking attempt in Jade's kitchen

Last night out in the harbor for dinner

My poor Whitey has to take antibiotics and change her diet due to kidney disease. She's always the life of the party, so it's really sad seeing her all weak and miserable these days. Plus, she hates me for those discusting drops I have to give her. :( Hopefully after the meds are over, she'll be back to her annoying, lively self.

Feeling nostalgic again...

I am finally finally finally getting my 2009 Estonia/Turkey/Barcelona photos developed. I'll get them in the mail this week, although assuming the promptness of the company's delivery services doesn't match their cheap prices (9 cents a copy!), I will be waiting a little while longer.
I was looking through my hard drive for more pics to develop and I then came across these clips...

(At the Laulupidu last June).

A medley de cinema française...

And here is my favorite scene from The 400 Blows. This is probably one of my favorite scenes of all time.

C'est officiel!

Thing

The grey whale in False Creek today! My co-workers and I were pulled out of work this afternoon to go check out this lost whale. How rare and wonderful it was!
At first it was a matter of hurry up and wait. We biked as fast as we could to a point just by the Cambie st. bridge and sat in the grass for a good 10 minutes before witnessing it coming up for air. Once it started moving out into English Bay though, everyone scrambled for their cameras or jumped on our bikes to chase the whale, hoping for another glimpse.
Just past the bridge, my co-worker Dan and I were biking on the seawall and all of a sudden it was there! It was RIGHT THERE! I could see it's back, all barnacle-y and grey and the spouting of water from it's blow hole.
I can't help but sound corny here, but at that moment I felt overwhelmed, humbled yet high and alive all at the same time. And of course, fortunate. So freaking lucky I got to be there and witness this cool thing.

I'm no fan of hockey. I liked how the gold medal game this February brought together all sorts of Canadians, and gave us a sense of absolute unity for a couple hours. Although, in most cases, hockey brings together obnoxious drunk idiots (mostly among males of the 19-30 age range). ...I dunno, it's just not my sport. While everyone (minus me) in my family got to share a sense of unity while watching the game tonight, I got to experience a similar unity during that 30 minutes of all of us silently anticipating a sighting, or waiting for the great big beauty of a whale to say 'hi.'

Had the girls over for dinner on Thursday last week, Here are a few pics!

Danica scared of a bee

Here we are calling our beloved Hannah in Montreal.

Hannah's in Montreal living there and going to grad school in Sept. And in a few days, Carmella will be embarking on a bike trip across Canada! Literally to the very Eastern shores of Newfoundland, where she'll go to grad school. I'm going to miss that girl terribly! I hope I become rich soon and buy a ticket to see her. xoxox Safe travels Carmelita!

I keep running into someone I scarcely know. We always end up at the same gatherings, same intersections downtown... What does this mean? hmm

T

Horray! I finally got my act together and had a few close friends over for a proper tea party.
And boys, you probably won't ever understand the attraction of a tea party (other than the free food). Think of this as a poker night... substitute cigars for pearls or lace, nachos and beer for cream cheese & lox.
As much as I loved getting these wonderful ladies together, I also found the whole process of preparation (although exhausting) so much fun! Planning the baking, arranging the china, the smells in the kitchen... sigh* I liked making the mini sandwiches and wraps the most though. Something about making things miniature and sticking them with toothpicks is very satisfying. Sweating around the oven and setting out the doily.... It was like being a Stepford wife to 7 girlfriends, (NOT a husband.) I loved it! :)
I'd love to have another one in the backyard when the weather is a bit more consistent. Glad you all could come ladies!!! And especially Diana, who was supposed to be in the US for a Polish dancing event (but due to the devastating events last weekend, it was cancelled). My condolences Dee!

Jason Allum!
My lovely friend cut my hair the other day. I was his first client! EVER!
He had only cut those "Judy" model heads in class before, and never a head of curly/wavy hair either. I think he did a fantastic job. I rarely have haircuts that I totally like, but in this case (and there are very few!) I loved it.
I wish him the best for his future career, although I hope he doesn't become too successful because then I wouldn't be able to afford him. :) ...I'm sure it will come to that though.

Once again, it's Barcelona.

Today, last year, was my departure date from YVR to BCN. I can't believe it's been a year. That 9 months there were some of the best of my life (many more to come of course).
I can't really explain how much that place means to me. It's the kind of city that overwhelms and scares you at first, with all the people, the tension of Las Ramblas and other panic-y tourist packed sections. At least that is how I felt. GET ME OUT OF HERE!
But I knew that it was a place that needed another chance. You can't realize it's enchantment in a matter of days (or maybe you can, if you don't get pick-pocketed and are able relax easily). The warm terra cotta shades of the narrow streets. The brilliant summer light of midday, dimming to a warm satisfying glow in the evening. My long walks and bike rides. It's festivals and traditions. A croissant and hot café con leche on an August morning, at an hour just before it becomes too stifling to walk anywhere. The sparkling cava and fresh sea food...
I won't go on an on, (and you know I can). Just wanted to express thanks to those that made my stay in Barcelona so very special.
xox you know who you are!

Coffee break!

On my route home from work today, a drunk bum told me to "piss off" (because I safely biked passed him?). But I soon forgot about the "Piss off lady, go tell your friends! Bradabraghh" when I rode past a parked Police car near my house. The front seats were occupied with two cops full on making out with each other. Yep, saw his hand groping her pony tail, full on necking action! Don't see that everyday. Kinda made me smile.

YES!!!!!!

I got in! I got in! I got in! :D
I thought that small envelopes instead of big envelopes from academic institutes were scary, because small envelope= you suck. you are not going to our school ever.

BUT NO! This small envelope today means "Emily Carr here I come." :) And into 3rd year already too!!

Being in Vancouver on a spring day like this and having a new boyfriend... What could make me smile more?... this and an endless supply of mint chocolate chip ice cream, and a job would probably make me smile more. Maybe I'll get that next week. :) The colour pink makes one more optimistic.

I love eating mint chocolate chip ice cream while watching a good movie with my dad. Last week was The Darjeeling Ltd.

Cat. Seems like, apart from a sweet comment a stranger made today about my hair, my cat was one of the only things that cheered me up from a rather avoidably bad morning.

No, I didn't come to Barcelona because of THAT movie. (although it did fuel my obsession with this city, slightly). First time living away from home, away from Canada... Thinking it's gonna be an adventure. I want to share my ups and downs with you during my European get away, so enjoy. :)
